In DC, Erik Wemple wrote under the header, "With Bernie Fine Story, ESPN Is A Model Of Accountability." Wemple wrote, "ESPN has shown the rest of journalists how an accountable news organization works." Following ESPN's initial report, the public "wanted to know a lot about the process." The net responded, as its "editorial transparency" began with a Q&A from ESPN Senior VP & Dir of News Vince Doria. There were more questions, prompting ESPN to answer "a good many of them directly," and the net's "openness prompted a great deal of chatter on the Internet." Wemple: "Who knows if ESPN engaged in classic corporate behavior in pursuing the Fine story. It certainly didn't engage in classic corporate behavior in responding to criticism of it" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 12/9).

Some feel Rangers players are "overreacting"
to HBO's cameras for "24/7" series

MUGGING FOR THE CAMERA: In N.Y., Bob Raissman reported HBO's cameras for its "24/7 Flyers/Rangers" series "have been filming for only a week, but there is already controversy." The Rangers' MSG broadcasters "are right in the middle of it, basically saying HBO's cameras are changing the team's personality." Play-by-play announcer Kenny Albert suggested Rangers C Artem Anisimov was "playing up the HBO cameras" when he used his stick as a gun and pointing it at the Lightning bench after scoring a goal. Analyst Joe Micheletti, when asked if the team is "overreacting" to the cameras, said, "You certainly would have to consider that (they are overreacting). They (the cameras) are around, the Rangers know what this 24/7 and all this is all about. It's not Anisimov's personality to do what he did." Raissman noted the broadcasters are "saying the mere presence of HBO cameras has the Rangers getting chippy and a guy like Anisimov doing a Jekyll and Hyde routine" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/11).

A MATTER OF SURVIVAL: On Long Island, Neil Best reported the MLB Fan Cave "will be back in 2012, at the same lower Manhattan location." However, instead of "picking two fans to spend the entire season watching every game, multiple participants will begin, then be eliminated gradually, 'Survivor' style throughout the summer" (NEWSDAY.com, 12/9).
