NFL Lockout Watch, Day 84: More Coaches Speak Out Against NFLCA Filing

The Jets on Thursday “became the latest team to publicly distance itself from a legal brief filed to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals by the NFL Coaches Association last week,” according to Manish Mehta of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Jets coach Rex Ryan on Thursday said, "I spoke with the coaches about it. The thing I can say about it is none of our guys knew anything about it. It kind of came out of left field on us. Nobody knew it was filed and nobody approved it being filed, so that's where it is.” Eagles coach Andy Reid and Chiefs coach Todd Haley on Thursday “released statements with a similar take as Ryan” (NYDAILYNEWS.com, 6/2). In Buffalo, Mark Gaughan noted the Bills’ coaches “joined a bunch of other coaching staffs” on Thursday in “distancing themselves from” the NFLCA motion to support the players in the current labor dispute. Bills offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins: “Our entire staff had no prior knowledge, nor were we consulted that the amicus brief was being filed on behalf of the coaches. We support Mr. (Ralph) Wilson” (BUFFALONEWS.com, 6/2). Panthers coach Ron Rivera in a statement said, “The Panthers coaches did not approve the filing and do not agree with it and continue their work in preparing for the 2011 season” (CHARLOTTEOBSERVER.com, 6/2). In Philadelphia, Rich Hofmann notes Reid on Thursday joined the group of coaches “who have disassociated themselves” from the NFLCA and the legal brief (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 6/3).
