Running Documentary Airs Today Only In 360 Theaters Nationwide

"Hood to Coast," a documentary that follows four teams “as they prepare for and run one of the longest relays with the highest number of participants in the world -- the Hood to Coast” -- will air tonight in 360 theaters nationwide in a one-night-only showing, according to Lauren Zima of DAILY VARIETY. Producer Anna Campbell and her production team “partnered with sports websites such as Active.com, but they also turned to an almost old-fashioned grassroots campaign: A team spent weeks holed up in her house cold calling and e-mailing running orgs all over the country to get the word out about the film's one-time theatrical berth.” Starbucks outlets also “featured footage from the doc on its wi-fi homepage.” NCM Fathom Entertainment tonight will “feature a live red carpet from Portland, Ore., and a pre-taped panel with celebrities from the running world shot at Nike headquarters.” Zima noted the “challenge of a one-night showing is that it's basically a one-night shot in the dark; it's hard to predict how many people will show up.” But NCM Fathom VP Dan Diamond said that the “traffic for the film on Fathom's website has been ‘very strong,’" and estimated that “7,000 tickets of about 85,000 available seats had been pre-sold” as of last Thursday (VARIETY.com, 1/9).

SOMETHING TO BEHOLD: In Charlotte, Theoden Janes writes "Hood to Coast" is an "absolute gem of a sports documentary." While some stars emerge from the teams, the "real star is the event itself." Janes: "The footage is phenomenal, thanks to crews both on the ground and in the air, and to camera operators with street cred. ... The scenery in general is breathtaking, and will be absolutely stunning on the big screen. If you've never been to the Northwest, you likely will want to after seeing this film" (CHARLOTTEOBSERVER.com, 1/11).
