Joe Gibbs Says He Will Maintain Control Of Race Team

Gibbs To Continue Running
NASCAR Race Team
Joe Gibbs retired as coach of the Redskins last month, but he “isn’t ready to turn complete control of Joe Gibbs Racing over to his son, team [President] J.D. Gibbs, or anyone else,” according to Seth Livingstone of USA TODAY. Joe Gibbs: “I’ll probably never turn it over.” J.D. Gibbs said: “Dad’s always been the boss. I just work here.” Livingstone notes Joe Gibbs Racing is in the “midst of a major transition,” having left Chevrolet for Toyota. The team also has “three of the more driven personalities in the garage” in Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and new hire Kyle Busch. But Joe Gibbs shows “no concern the sometimes-volatile [Busch] might detract from team chemistry.” Joe Gibbs: “Both those other guys really respect Kyle. We would not have gone after Kyle had Tony and Denny not said, ‘Go get him.’” Busch has been “instantly impressed with [Joe] Gibbs.” Busch said, “When he walks through the shop, saying hello, shaking hands, he raises spirits” (USA TODAY, 2/14). Gibbs, when asked about the future of NASCAR, said, “This sport is going to continue to take off. It may hit a bounce like we have the last year, but it’s going to be a great place for sponsors to reach out to (fans). They’re using technical products, eating the food, drinking the drinks. And it’s also a great TV sport” (USA TODAY, 2/14).
