| Cardinals Name John Mozeliak GM |
The MLB Cardinals yesterday named Assistant GM
JOHN MOZELIAK the 12th GM in franchise history, replacing former GM
WALT JOCKETTY, who left the club
last month, according to Joe Strauss of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. Mozeliak, "long considered the protégé of his ousted predecessor," signed a three-year contract after holding the interim GM position for nearly a month. Mozeliak, the "only one of five finalists" not to formally interview with Cardinals Chair

MARK LAMPING, was offered the job after Indians VP/Baseball Operations
CHRIS ANTONETTI removed his name from consideration. Mozeliak said that he "plans to retain much of Jocketty's support staff." Strauss notes while Jocketty "was reluctant to embrace statistical analysis," Mozeliak will "assume supervision of the organization's analytical department" from VP/Amateur Scouting & Player Development
JEFF LUHNOW. Mozeliak is "likely to involve input from a broader number of people," including manager
TONY LA RUSSA, his coaches and Luhnow. Mozeliak said, "The environment will be one that encourages open thinking" (
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 11/1). In Cleveland, Paul Hoynes reports Antonetti pulled his name "because the [GM's] authority might be restricted." La Russa and his staff were rehired before a GM was hired, and Jocketty "reportedly struggled for power" with Luhnow. Antonetti denied that claim (
