Blog Hound: NBA Fines Execs For Discussing Underclassmen

In the wake of Celtics Exec Dir of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge being fined after sitting next to Univ. of Texas F Kevin Durant’s family at the Big 12 tournament, bloggers are discussing the NBA’s underclassman rule and its impact. Bobcats Managing Member of Basketball Operations Michael Jordan and Warriors coach Don Nelson were also fined for discussing Durant and, in Nelson’s case, Ohio State C Greg Oden.

“Notwithstanding what I think about the rule, I believe the NBA is making the correct interpretation: it would seem to be in the spirit of the rule for it to extend to immediate family members of the player, otherwise there would be a rather jarring loophole.”

“But in all reality, what does it even matter? How can Ainge talking to Durant’s momma have any influence over his decision to enter the draft? After all, it's not like Durant gets to choose where he goes.”

“Ainge, whatever. He should’ve sensed that wasn’t a kosher situation. With Nelson and MJ, though, you’ve got to wonder: is there any conversation about basketball this season that doesn't lead back to Oden/Durant?”
Dime Magazine’s Blog
“Why is this even a rule? Is the intent to prevent NBA teams from persuading college prospects from coming out early? Because KD and Greg are grown men, and even if one NBA official complimenting them is enough to push them into the draft, that’s still their decision as grown men.”

“I understand the fear that the NBA has here, and while I think it’s dumb, I respect them and the NCAA. They’re trying their best to prevent any corruption between players and suits in the NBA. I don’t necessarily agree with it, but I can roll with it.”
