NHL Franchise Notes: New Islanders GM Has Contract Issues

New Isles GM Trying To Get
His Playing Contract Off Payroll

The player contract of new Islanders GM Garth Snow, who retired as a player to take the position, “called for a $750,000 salary for this season and next, and that figure technically remains on the team’s cap because of a CBA rule stipulating such for players who sign contracts after the age of 35.” Snow indicated that he will “appeal to the NHL to have his contract dropped, because he underwent hip surgery in June and isn’t sure if he would have been ready by training camp” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/20).

COPPS & ROBBERS: In Pittsburgh, Shelly Anderson reports it “appears the group from Canada that withdrew its bid to buy the Penguins is interested in bringing the NHL to Hamilton, Ontario.” A group “has had a $200,000 deal with Hamilton that gives it proprietorship over Copps Coliseum. That deal expires in about six months, but there were talks recently to extend it.” It is “believed to be the same group — or some semblance of it — that had the high bid for the Penguins.” The bid was withdrawn over the weekend, “apparently because of concerns over not being able to move the Penguins in case financial problems arose with the issue of a new arena” (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 7/20).

POACHED SALMON: The Senators and Canadiens will play a preseason game on September 25 near Salmon River, Nova Scotia, after the city was “awarded the grand prize of hosting an exhibition game and given the honorary title of being Canada’s most passionate hockey community” by viewers of a CBC reality show. The game will be played in Truro, Nova Scotia (CP, 7/19).
