Former New Jersey Gov. JAMES MCGREEVEY is doing legal work for Virginia-based MILLS CORP., the same company his administration named to develop the $1.3B XANADU project at the Meadowlands. Mills Corp. spokesperson MICHAEL TURNER said that the company hired New Jersey state Sen. RAYMOND LESNIAK’s law firm, WEINER LESNIAK, to oversee the project in ’03 when the state first selected Mills Corp. Lesniak then hired McGreevey after he resigned his office last year (Margolin & Whelan, Newark STAR-LEDGER, 4/27).

NASCAR NATION: JEFF MACGREGOR, author of “SUNDAY MONEY,” appeared on last night’s edition of CBS’ “LATE SHOW” to talk about his book, which chronicles his journey around the country in an RV attending NASCAR races. MacGregor: “Tailgating in NASCAR means that for the February race in Daytona you got there in late December. So you’ve been parked out there, and you’ve got this ten-horsepower margarita maker, and it’s 250,000 people enjoying themselves wearing no shirts or shoes and drunk in a way that’s almost beyond human description.” CBS’ David Letterman asked, “Will NASCAR be happy with the book?” MacGregor: “I don’t think so, Dave. Do you?” (“Late Show,” CBS, 4/26).

NAMES: Patriots coach BILL BELICHICK served as an auctioneer during a MARCH OF DIMES event at the Morton's in Stamford, CT, this week, where he bid $2,500 for the opportunity to visit the Jets’ locker room in an attempt to encourage bidding. Belichick joked, "If I win, I want to get an inside look at the Jets locker room" (Zach Lowe, Stamford ADVOCATE, 4/26).The ST. LOUIS SPORTS COMMISSION has been named sports commission of the year by the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SPORTS COMMISSIONS. The St. Louis commission, which also won the award in ’02, is the only one in the 350-member association to win twice (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 4/26).
