Kasten Plunks Down $100,000 For Nationals Bidding Rights

Former Braves, Thrashers & Hawks President Stan Kasten “has filed an application to buy the Nationals,” according to sources cited by Thomas Heath of the WASHINGTON POST. It was unclear whether Kasten “had aligned himself with an investment group or if he hoped to buy the team on his own,” but sources said that he “has spoken with at least one of the investment groups looking to buy the Nationals, and possibly more, about running a team.” Kasten joins five other suitors who have deposited $100,000 for bidding rights to the new franchise, including the Lerner family; a DC-based investment group led by Fred Malek and Jeffrey Zients; Tennessee-based developer Franklin Haney Sr.; former Capitals investor Jonathan Ledecky; and Virginia-based American Baseball Capital, headed by William Collins (WASHINGTON POST 2/15).
