Despite Improved Record, Magic See Marginal Attendance Gains

Magic Execs Expect Second-Half
Comeback For Attendance

The Magic through 24 home games are averaging 14,523, a pace that would mark the third-lowest average in the team’s 16-year history, ahead of only ’99-’00 (14,059) and ’03-04 (14,369), according to John Denton of FLORIDA TODAY. The team ranks 28th in the NBA in attendance and has recorded the four lowest-attended games in franchise history so far this season. While the Magic are selling more single-game tickets on average than ever before, that is “because season-ticket sales have plunged to an all-time low” (FLORIDA TODAY, 2/15). In Orlando, Tim Povtak reports the Magic this season sold 7,500 season tickets, down from 9,400 last season. However, the Magic “expect attendance to rise significantly after the all-star break.” The team has had four sellouts this season, and is “expecting at least three more” with two games against the Heat and one against the Cavaliers. Magic VP/Marketing Chris D’Orso: “We’re out there wrestling for people’s time, but we’re very optimistic about the rest of the season. A month from now, you’ll be writing the opposite story, about why we’re doing so well at the gate” (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 2/15).
