Veteran sports journalist Mike Freeman, who recently left the N.Y. Times to accept a position as an Indianapolis Star sports columnist, resigned due to inaccuracies on his resume. Freeman: "I filled out an application form and stated I was a graduate of the University of Delaware. I also, for the first time ever, stated this fact on my resume. These were lies." Freeman added, "I was at the university for four years but in fact did not graduate. This was a terrible and unforgivable manipulation of the facts. ... It was the only time I have told such falsehoods and no other deceptions have ever appeared in any of my newspaper stories or two books at any time in my 16 years of practicing journalism." Indianapolis Star Editor Dennis Ryerson: "The Star is committed to operating with high ethical standards. We recognize credibility issues have confronted our industry, and we want to be a leader in addressing those issues" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 1/10). In DC, Howard Kurtz noted Freeman covered the NFL for the Washington Post in '88 and again from '90-92, and also had stints with the Boston Globe and Dallas Morning News. Freeman is the author of "Bloody Sundays: Inside the Dazzling, Rough-and-Tumble World of the NFL" and "ESPN: The Uncensored History." Freeman last year for the N.Y. Times covered the Maurice Clarett case involving allegations of academic misconduct (WASHINGTON POST, 1/10).
