WNBA Gets A Breath Of Fresh Air With Oxygen Game Of The Week

Oxygen Media has signed a two-year deal with the WNBA to televise 11 regular season games in '02, as well as a yet-to-be-determined number of regular season and playoff games in '03. Financial terms were not disclosed. Oxygen's first broadcast is tonight at 10:00pm ET and will feature Lynx-Storm. All but one of Oxygen's '02 telecasts will begin Tuesday nights at 10:00pm ET. NBAE, in conjunction with Oxygen, will produce the telecasts. Beth Mowins and Debbie Antonelli will serve as Oxygen's announcing team. The league, except for certain spots reserved for Oxygen, will handle ad sales (THE DAILY). MULTICHANNEL NEWS DAY writes the ESPN networks "had been the cable-exclusive WNBA home until now." Last year, ESPN averaged a 0.4 Nielsen cable rating for 12 regular season games, down from a 0.5 the year before. ESPN2 averaged a 0.3 last year in its first season of WNBA coverage (MULTICHANNEL NEWS DAY, 6/4).
