MLB: USA TODAY's Mike Dodd writes on new MLB ballparks in a Sports Cover Story under the header, "If You Build It, They May Not Come": "The distinction is significant and a manifestation of baseball economics in the 21st century: a $250-$300[M] facility is no longer a panacea but a prerequisite." The Tigers, who are in their second year at Comerica Park, "saw their attendance drop" 24% this year to an average of 24,000 60% of capacity in the 40,000-seat ballpark. Dodd: "Even the year's success story, Miller Park in Milwaukee, isn't as dramatic as the turnarounds of the '90s." The Bonham Group Chair Dean Bonham said that "owners for major league sports franchises, not just baseball, tended to overestimate the impact of a new facility" (USA TODAY, 11/6)....This week's issue of CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS features an editorial to the Tribune Co. regarding the proposed expansion of Wrigley Field: "The answer to the controversy over expanding Wrigley Field is simple: No, no, and no. ... Quaint little Wrigley Field has been your chief drawing card for years, pulling in fans and television viewers who wouldn't otherwise pay to see your mediocre on-field product. Claims that the park is now an economic millstone ring hollow" (CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS, 11/5)....Philadelphia-based Global Spectrum has been selected to manage a proposed new convention center to be constructed in St. Charles, MO (Global Spectrum).
CLARIFICATION: In yesterday's issue, THE DAILY misidentified the arena in Dallas where a rodeo was recently held. The event was held at the American Airlines Center.
