DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS? NCAA SUED OVER ANTITRUST CLAIM

NJ-based The Gazelle Group, Cincinnati-based Worldwide
Basketball & Sport Tours, VA-based Sports Promotions,
Milwaukee-based Sport Tours Int'l and NJ-based The Black
Coaches Association have filed suit in U.S. District Court
in Columbus, OH, against the NCAA for being in violation of
federal antitrust laws -- restraint of trade and
monopolization -- as well as other anticompetitive
practices. The suit claims that the NCAA, Division I-A
conferences and commissioners in particular, have imposed
anticompetitive rules and restrictions to maintain a
monopoly over Division I college basketball events. The
NCAA Division I Management Council stated that it will
eliminate preseason certified basketball events and will not
recognize tournament contracts signed after July 25, 2000.
The immediate effect of the Management Council's act has
been what the plaintiffs call an inability of the plaintiffs
to obtain future contracts for sponsors, venues and Division
I colleges in their events (The Gazelle Group).
