RIDERS ON THE STORM IN SEATTLE; SEARCHING FOR SOL IN MIAMI

The WNBA announced yesterday, "after an extensive trademark search," that the nickname of Seattle's expansion franchise will be the Storm, according to Meredith Bagley of the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER. Storm Senior Dir of League Operations Karen Bryant: "We like the name because of the connection to local weather, and because it conveys a strong attitude that this team will be a force." The team's logo will be unveiled at a ceremony on January 19 at KeyArena, and the 7,100 fans who put down deposits for season tickets "will get the first look at the new logo." A public unveiling will follow (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 1/7). HEART AND SOL: The Heat's WNBA franchise will hold a "glitzy" ceremony at AmericanAirlines Arena tonight to reveal its nickname, the Sol. Sol is the Spanish word for sun. The Sol becomes the fourth expansion team, along with the Indiana Fever, Seattle Storm and Portland Fire, to get a nickname (Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 1/7).
