HICKS MUSE BUILDS UP LATIN CABLE BASE FOR SPORTS PROGRAMS

Hicks Muse Tate & Furst has purchased a 35.9% stake in
Argentine cable company Cablevision SA from Spain's
Telefonica for $545M plus the assumption of $395M in debt,
according to Craig Torres of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. The
deal will allow Hicks Muse to "fuse its other cable
properties in the region into a company with more than 2.3
million subscribers and several major programming assets,"
including sports content producer Torneos & Competencias,
also known as TyC. Hicks Muse, along with Liberty Media,
will become controlling partners of TyC (WALL ST JOURNAL,
1/4). In Dallas, Richard Alm notes Hicks Muse-controlled
companies have secured the rights to Brazilian and Argentine
soccer games and they "plan to launch the Pan American
Sports Network" in February (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 1/4).
