ASC MAKES GOOD ON VOUCHERS DESPITE MEETING SNOW GUARANTEE

American Skiing Co. (ASC) offered guests of its six New
England resorts vouchers for a 25% reduction in their next
vacation at the same resort this season, plus $500 off a
future visit to The Canyons in UT or Steamboat in CO,
despite meeting a guarantee that 70% of the ski trails at
the resorts they visited would be open this Holiday season
(see THE DAILY, 12/8) (ASC). In VT, Curtis & Smallheer
reported that Killington execs are crediting the conditions
guarantee for a 150% increase in reservations over last
season. But some skiers interviewed at Killington said that
"no one had mentioned the guarantee or offered vouchers to
them when they checked in." While some were aware of the
vouchers, "most said they didn't book their vacations based
on the offer." Killington spokesperson Steve Wright: "The
idea was largely a marketing strategy to bring our guests
in, but there wasn't any tactical marketing strategy to hide
it once they got here" (RUTLAND (VT) HERALD, 12/28).
