NIKE SET TO DEBUT SIGNATURE SNEAKERS ON THE WEB TODAY

Nike's "personalized" e-commerce initiative that allows
buyers to "stitch their own name instead of Michael Jordan's
next to the swoosh" on its shoes launches this afternoon on
Nike.com, according to USA TODAY's Tom Content. The
initiative, called NikeID, "is a step toward broader
customization of athletic shoes at Nike." NikeID is
"starting small," with Nike selling "up to 400 pairs per
day." Buyers can have "a name or nickname, up to eight
letters," stitched on the side of either Nike's Air
Turbulence running shoe or Air Famished cross trainer.
Buyers will then be charged an extra $10 plus shipping and
handling for the service. A "fiber" prohibits buyers from
inscribing "an obscenity or a name that violates copyright
or trademark laws on the shoe." The shoes "will be
manufactured in China and Korea and delivered to customers
in two to three weeks" (USA TODAY, 11/22).
