KANATA MAYOR WILL SUPPORT ARENA AID, BUT NO SENATORS SUBSIDY

Kanata, Ontario, Mayor Merle Nicholds told City Council
members last week she does not support tax relief for the
Senators, according to Ken Gray of the OTTAWA CITIZEN, who
reported that such a move "raises a major roadblock toward
keeping the NHL club in her city." Nicholds: "I'm not
throwing money at them. If somebody is talking about zero
taxes or 'give me a subsidy,' I'm not supportive of that."
Senators Chair Rod Bryden: "Merle is being careful and
cautious" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 11/21). But Nicholds did say
that she supports reducing the team's property tax bill by
moving the Corel Centre into another tax bracket, but she
would not commit to a full tax cut (OTTAWA SUN, 11/22).
