SPONSOR WANTED: U.S. PRO TENNIS EVENT IN BOSTON NEEDS BACKER

The "smart money would say" that the U.S. Pro Tennis
Championships at the Longwood Club in Boston will not be
"preserved," as the event "hasn't been able to attract" a
title sponsor in the "negotiable" $500,000 range, according
to Bud Collins of the BOSTON GLOBE, who wonders, "Is there
an angel out there somewhere who wants to lend his/her/its
name to keep a New England tradition operating in Boston?"
Woolf Associates has "withdrawn" as the event's promoter, as
it was "unsuccessful in finding" a sponsor for this year's
event held in August and "took a substantial bath" since it
had to pay $325,000 in prize money. Collins adds that the
"toughest decision" for the Longwood Board of Governors is
whether to "pull out of the tournament business." But
Longwood President Steve Roiter "hasn't lost hope" that a
sponsor will be found (BOSTON GLOBE, 11/16).
