NAMES IN THE NEWS

          A CT cardiologist paid $12,100 on eBay yesterday for
     four box seats to Game Three of the Yankees-Red Sox series,
     which will feature a pitching matchup of PEDRO MARTINEZ vs.
     ROGER CLEMENS (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/14)....WPIX-TV Yankees play-
     by-play announcer and WFAN radio host SUZYN WALDMAN was
     profiled by Dan Rather on CBS "Evening News" last night. 
     Rather noted that a month before her TV debut, Waldman was
     diagnosed with breast cancer.  Waldman, on the timing of her
     diagnosis: "Women have been waiting a thousand years for
     this.  I've been waiting a long time for this.  I can't not
     do this.  I remember telling [Yankees Owner GEORGE
     STEINBRENNER], is this going to stop me from getting me my
     TV job?  I promise you I won't throw up in the booth, and I
     won't appear bald on the air."  Rather: "Today, Suzyn is an
     integral part of the Yankees team -- a full time announcer
     and a part-time counselor to players like DARRYL STRAWBERRY
     [who was diagnosed with cancer last year]" ("Evening News,"
     CBS, 10/13)....SERENA WILLIAMS made a PR swing through N.Y.
     yesterday, as she gave a "motivational visit" to Harlem's
     Public School 129 yesterday, along with interviews with
     BARBARA WALTERS and CONAN O'BRIEN (N.Y. TIMES, 10/14).  On
     "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," Serena said, "You know,
     Conan, ... since I won the U.S. Open I was thinking every
     time I answer my phone I should be, ring, ring, 'Hello. U.S.
     Open champ.'"  Serena, when asked by Conan if she has
     thought about different hairstyles: "I have thought about
     different hairstyles.  This is my trademark.  I've been
     doing this for a long time.  I think maybe next year even,
     or maybe a couple years from now, I think I might change up
     a little bit" ("Late Night," NBC, 10/13)....Both NICOLE
     KIDMAN and GREG NORMAN will run the Olympic torch across
     Sydney before the Opening Ceremonies for the 2000 Olympics
     (DAILY MIRROR, 10/13).....In L.A., Howard Beck reports that
     Lakers F RICK FOX is Exec Producer of the 20-minute film
     "Four Faces of God."  Beck: "It's the latest step in Fox's
     steady transition from basketball player to Hollywood
     player" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 10/14)....Entertainment Tonight's
     Bob Goen reported that "a feature film on [WILT
     CHAMBERLAIN's] life, in which he was participating, is
     expected to begin production next year" ("ET," 10/13).
