WHERE ARE THE BRAVE HEARTS? NO SELLOUT FOR NLCS GAME ONE

About 6,500 tickets went unsold for last night's Game
One of the NLCS at Turner Field, as 44,172 showed up to
watch the Mets-Braves, according to Noble, Herrmann & Herzog
of NEWSDAY, who write that the "there were huge stretches of
empty seats in rightfield, an overt sign it was not even
close to a sellout." Nearly 10,000 tickets remain unsold
for today's Game Two (NEWSDAY, 10/13). NBC's Bob Costas
said during last night's broadcast, "The story of the Braves
in the '90s is one of tremendous achievement and tremendous
disappointment. Some fans don't get their hopes up until
the World Series, which partially explains the empty seats.
... I'm pretty sure that when we get to Shea Stadium for ...
Games Three, Four and Five over the weekend in Queens -- you
won't find any empty seats" ("NLCS Game One," NBC, 10/12).
OTHER BASEBALL NOTES: The Pirates increased ticket
prices of the most expensive seats by $2 for the team's
final season at Three Rivers Stadium. Field boxes will
increase from $18 to $20 per game. Price increases vary
from $1 to $2, while general admission tickets remain at $6.
The average ticket price will be $12.56, which includes a 5%
tax that will help pay for maintenance at PNC Park (TRIBUNE-
REVIEW, 10/8)....In Sacramento, River City Baseball has
already sold 3,000 season tickets for the Triple A baseball
team that is scheduled to begin play next April at a 10,400-
seat ballpark in West Sacramento (SACRAMENTO BEE, 10/12).
