JR.'S LEAGUE: RIPKEN BUYING MINORITY SHARE OF IBL TEAM

Orioles 3B Cal Ripken will "announce the purchase" of a
minority share in the IBL BayRunners today, according to
Brent Jones of the Baltimore SUN, who notes that Ripken will
be another "big-name" athlete involved with the IBL, joining
Cincinnati Stuff Owner Oscar Robertson. Ira Rainess, who
coordinates Ripken's commercial enterprises, said Ripken
will have a "significant role" with the BayRunners, but that
his "ownership stake will be less than that of the league."
Rainess "would not say whether Ripken had invested money" or
if he was receiving a share of the team in exchange for the
BayRunners "being able to use his name." Rainess: "He's a
true partner." BayRunners President Greg Smith said that a
majority share of the BayRunners is "still up for sale."
Jones adds that Ripken's "most significant role" with the
BayRunners will "come in promotion" (Baltimore SUN, 10/13).
