EARLY POLL NUMBERS SHOW THAT SPURS HAVE SOME GROUND TO GAIN

A telephone survey of 500 likely San Antonio voters
conducted last week for the hospitality industry by
Representatives of Citizens for Responsible Spending "shows
that pro-arena forces" in San Antonio "are having a
difficult time selling" Bexar County voters on the Freeman
Coliseum site and "the deal between" the Spurs and the
county, according to Cary Cardwell of the SAN ANTONIO
EXPRESS-NEWS. In the survey, 48% "opposed the plan to raise
hotel-motel and car-rental taxes" to help pay for the arena,
while 41% "supported the plan" and 11% were "undecided."
Arena supporters "were quick to dismiss the findings,
calling the poll 'illegitimate' because the primary
question" referred to the facility as a "new San Antonio
Spurs Arena," while the ballot for the November 2 election
"speaks of 'a multi-purpose arena, coliseum or other type of
arena or facility'" (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 9/27).
