          WNBA SALES: Fred Meyer Inc. bought 500 season tickets
     to help Portland's WNBA team reach 3,800 commitments.  The
     team needs to sell 5,500 tickets by October 15 (OREGONIAN,
     9/24).  In Miami, the Heat brought out G Tim Hardaway to
     announce that he bought a season-ticket package and now the
     WNBA team has 4,500 deposits (MIAMI HERALD, 9/24).
          POWER PLAYERS: An AD AGE special issue lists "21 To
     Watch In The 21st Century."  Among those listed are Lions
     Vice Chair William Clay Ford, Jr. and Redskins Owner Daniel
     Snyder (AD AGE, 9/20).  Snyder is profiled in a front-page
     feature in the WASHINGTON POST, and Michael Leahy writes
     that Snyder has "not sought to conceal his contempt for the
     managerial ways of his predecessors, offering that, under
     John Kent Cooke, the Redskins organization resembled a
     'rudderless boat bobbing on the ocean'" (WASHINGTON POST,
     9/24)....In Las Vegas, Steve Carp, on Mayor Oscar Goodman
     meeting with NBA Commissioner David Stern & NHL Commissioner
     Gary Bettman about bringing a pro team to the city: "The
     guess here is that Goodman leaves New York with a definite
     yes from the NHL provided he can produce an arena and a
     likely OK from the NBA if he can guarantee [Padres Owner
     John] Moores' backing, while resolving the issue of gambling
     on NBA games to Stern's satisfaction" (LAS VEGAS SUN, 9/23).
