TWEAKED PEAK: SAN ANTONIO MAYOR NOT A FAN OF NEW ARENA PLAN

San Antonio Mayor Howard Peak "blasted" Bexar County's
arena plan for the Spurs in a "pair of sharply worded
letters" and "stopped just short of threatening to work
against" the $175M proposal, according to Chris Williams of
the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. Williams: "Most of Peak's
questions centered on whether the county's plan would hurt
the city's investment in the tourism industry and the
Alamodome in order to benefit the privately owned Spurs."
But Spurs Exec VP Leo Gomez "disputed Peak's suggestions"
that Spurs ownership was "making windfall profits from the
team." Gomez said the team will lose between $6-7M this
year and is projected to lose $30M by the time it moves into
the proposed new arena in 2002. Gomez: "If (the owners)
wanted windfall profits, they would sell the team. Someone
     is not appreciating that" (S.A. EXPRESS-NEWS, 8/18).
