A STORM FRONT COMING? DOES EL NINO MEAN BIG SPONSORSHIP $$?

Sergio Garcia is "beginning to get opportunities with
major sponsors" following his second place finish at the PGA
Championship, according to CNBC's Andrew Glassman, who
profiled Garcia during last night's "Business Center."
Garcia has a ball and glove deal with Titleist, apparel deal
with adidas and bag, clubs and headwear pact with Acushnet.
Glassman reported that Garcia's agent told him that "other
offers will roll in and will be considered later in the
week." But Univ. of Southern CA sports marketing professor
David Carter said of Garcia, "Let's not overexpose him.
Let's not place some unrealistic expectations on his career.
Let's let him evolve and grow up a little bit" (CNBC, 8/16).
Garcia's agent is Miami-based Jose Marquina.
STAR POWER: In Philadelphia, Bill Lyon writes that
backlash against Tiger Woods could continue, as some
consider him "tiresomely overpromoted." Lyon: "The best way
to rebut that is with your play, as [Michael] Jordan proved
over and over and over" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 8/17). In
Chicago, Ed Sherman writes that "sports is about star power,
and now golf appears to have two megawatters in Tiger Woods
and Sergio Garcia. ... Woods and Garcia have the potential
to do for golf what Larry Bird and Magic Johnson did for
     basketball" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/17).
