LEAGUE NOTES

COMO SE DICE TRADE? In Miami, Michelle Kaufman writes
that new MLS Commissioner Don Garber "seems like the perfect
man for the job, except ... He admittedly knows practically
nothing about soccer [and] he doesn't speak Spanish."
Garber's resume "is impressive," but Kaufman wonders "how
Garber will perform some basic functions of commissioner
without knowledge of soccer or Spanish." Kaufman suggests a
"To Do" list for Garber, with one item being to "move the
Fusion to Miami" (MIAMI HERALD, 8/17).
MORE NOTES: IBL Trenton Shooting Stars Owner Herb
Greenberg, on last week's IBL owners meetings: "The meetings
were excellent. All the teams are well underway. We lead
the league in corporation sponsorships. We are second in
season tickets right behind St. Louis. The financial
stability of all the teams are excellent. Overall, I am
happy with the way things are looking" (Trenton TIMES,
     8/17)....Following yesterday's announcement of the '99 U.S.
Ryder Cup team, Captain Ben Crenshaw addressed the recent
pay-for-play controversy and said, "The thing is behind us
now. I've talked to all the players" (N.Y. POST, 8/17).
