LEAGUE NOTES

NFL AUSSIE RULES: In N.Y., Mike Freeman wrote that NFL
officials at the American Bowl in Sydney "were busy putting
out several small fires behind the scenes." The NFL was
"able to intervene and remove" the gambling ads at Stadium
Australia before Saturday's game. In addition, "there was
another dispute" between the league and EAS. Because
several Broncos players endorse the supplement company, EAS
"attempted to get both their personal and promotional
products into the Denver locker room in Australia," but the
NFL "kept both out." Freeman: "There are sure to be other
disagreements. E.A.S. considers the Broncos some of their
most valuable clients, while the N.F.L. does not like the
company or its products" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/15). In Houston,
John McClain wrote that if the NFL "wants to make a smart
decision" in replacing NFL Int'l Senior VP Don Garber, it
"doesn't have to look beyond" NFL Europe President Oliver
Luck. If NFL execs "are smart, they will promote Luck
without a second thought" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 8/14).
WOMEN'S HOOP TOUR: The '99-2000 USA Basketball women's
national team will have a seven-month preparation tour this
fall and winter before the 2000 Summer Games. Ten of the 12
players expected to be on the 2000 team will meet in San
Diego next month for an int'l tournament that will "kick off
a 30-35 game schedule for the team through March, after
which players will join their WNBA teams for that league's
     summer season" (WASHINGTON POST, 8/15).
