ESPN'S SALVO AT MLB? WWC FINAL REPEAT UP AGAINST ALL-STARS

ESPN will rebroadcast the WWC Final tonight at 8:00pm
ET. The game will be presented Sunday on ESPN Classic at
5:00pm ET (ESPN). In Chicago, Phil Rosenthal writes that
ESPN's feud with MLB "continues tonight," with ESPN
repeating the Final at the "perfect time," against MLB's
All-Star Game. Rosenthal: "The soccer rerun won't draw much
of a crowd, but it's still a heck of a gesture" (CHICAGO
SUN-TIMES, 7/13). In Dallas, Barry Horn writes that if ESPN
"can woo a few 100,000 or so folks away from the All-Star
Game, the soccer game may be the king of summer" ratings
(DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 7/13)....ABC Sports Dir of PR Mark
Mandel, asked if ABC had received any complaints concerning
U.S. Women's soccer team D Brandi Chastain's use of "some
salty language" during her postgame interview: "We're
unaware of any reaction. We got no calls ... nothing from
the media, not anything" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 7/13)....In
N.Y, Richard Sandomir, on the U.S. team's appearance on
yesterday's morning news shows: "One was struck by the
gushfest on ABC's 'Good Morning America' by Robin Roberts
('Whoo Whoo!' 'You da women!') and Charlie Gibson, and the
controlled enthusiasm of Katie Couric during her smart
interview with the players on NBC's 'Today' show. Mark
McEwen's taped interview with the team on 'CBS This Morning'
showed intelligence without fawning" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/13).
