THE WARRIORS DON'T WANT A WNBA TEAM TO COME OUT AND PLAY

The Warriors withdrew their bid to acquire a WNBA
franchise for the 2000 season on Wednesday, according to
Jesse Barkin of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. After conducting
a feasibility study, the team has "decided to focus on
rebuilding" its fan base and concentrate on hosting the All-
Star Game in February. Barkin writes that there was
"speculation that the Warriors were among the front-runners"
for a team, given the "popularity" of women's basketball in
the region. Among those in the running for a WNBA team are
the Sonics, Blazers, Raptors, Nuggets and Pacers. The
league will "announce the addition of four teams" to start
next summer shortly (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 5/27).
