Cablevision Chair Charles Dolan and Devils Owner John
McMullen have joined in a plan to build a $216M arena for
the Devils in Hoboken, according to Buteau & Eichelberger of
BLOOMBERG NEWS. The two entities will split the cost of the
proposed arena (BLOOMBERG, 5/21). In N.Y., Luke Cyphers
reports that Dolan and McMullen also agreed to extend the
Devils' cable-TV contract with Fox Sports Net N.Y. (N.Y.
DAILY NEWS, 5/21). In NJ, Doug Most reports that the
Hoboken plan is "fueling talk that the two moguls may be
teaming up" to buy the Jets, and if that happens, there is
speculation they would move the team out of the Meadowlands.
Devils GM Lou Lamoriello: "This is all a prelude to having
to get the endorsement or blessings of the state. Now the
joint venture, a 50-50 proposition, is there and is finished
so there are no questions [about financing] should this
project go forward." More Lamoriello, on the Jets: "I have
no knowledge of that, but it was public knowledge that the
Dolan family and Dr. McMullen were interested in the
Redskins" (Bergen RECORD, 5/21). In N.Y., Richard Sandomir
reports that the Leon Hess family's anticipated hiring of
the investment firm Goldman Sachs to identify a buyer
"clarifies a belief that Hess did not want to pass the team
to his family as a legacy." An announcement from the Jets
about the expected sale could come today (N.Y. TIMES, 5/21).
