WELCOME HOME ... WINNER. CBS CAPTURES NINE SPORTS EMMYS

          CBS won nine Sports Emmy Awards, the most for any
     network this year, at the 20th annual event Wednesday in
     N.Y., according to Stephen Battaglio of the HOLLYWOOD
     REPORTER.  Six of CBS's Emmys were for its coverage of the
     '98 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.  CBS also won two
     for its NFL coverage, including a "technical" Emmy for the
     first NFL game broadcast in HDTV.  CBS had been "shut out"
     at the Sports Emmys for the past two years.  HBO and Fox
     with eight Emmys apiece, NBC five, ESPN2 three and ESPN,
     ABC, CNBC and the Outdoor Life Network earned one each.  Fox
     Sports won an Emmy for its coverage of Mark McGwire's
     record-breaking 62nd home run in the "live sports special
     category."  NBC's "Golf Tour" won for outstanding live
     sports series and NBC's "Wimbledon '98" won for outstanding
     live event turnaround (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 4/22).
