LEAFS/RAPTORS OWNERS MUST PAY C$1.6M TO SHAREHOLDERS IN SUIT

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. will pay C$1.6M
after "after the company and three directors admitted
yesterday they should have given shareholders more
information in a controversial 1994 takeover," according to
Tony Van Alphen of the TORONTO STAR. Ontario's Securities
Commission (OSC) approved a settlement in which MLSE will
pay the money "to resolve allegations" against the company
and directors Steve Stavro, Brian Bellmore and Donald Crump
regarding their actions in the takeover of Maple Leaf
Gardens Ltd. five years ago. MLSE will pay C$1.1M in four
installments to the OSC "which will direct the money for the
benefit of investors into such things as education
programs." The company will pay the remaining C$500,000 to
cover the costs of the OSC investigation (TORONTO STAR,
3/30). MLG shareholders were already compensated in a
class-action suit, receiving C$49.50 a share, instead of
C$34 offered in '94 (Maryanna Lewyckyj, TORONTO SUN, 3/30).
