VAIL SUES FOR WEB DOMAINS: CLAIMS INDIVIDUAL SEEKS CASH

Vail Resorts Inc. is suing a N.Y. man for trademark
infringement, dilution of trademark, unfair competition and
other charges, according to McPhee & Diddlebock of the
DENVER POST, who write that the individual "supposedly"
tried to sell the company some Web domain names tied to Vail
and Beaver Creek in exchange for ski passes and cash
compensation. Vail Resorts "moved to register" the names of
its two ski resorts "several years ago," but "ran into a
roadblock" as Stuart Weiss had registered www.vail.com and
www.beavercreek.com with web cataloguer Network Solutions
Inc. Weiss says that he "intended to use" the addresses as
part of a "ski-related Internet portal" and "never intended
to set up separate Vail or Beaver Creek Web sites." Vail
Resorts attorney Glenn Beaton says that Weiss requested ski
passes for 15 seasons, a couple of weeks of free lodging
each year and an "unspecified amount of money" in exchange
for the Web sites. Weiss says he requested ski passes and
lessons, but "never requested cash." Site for Vail and
Beaver Creek are at www.snow.com (DENVER POST, 3/22).
