FORMER ALI PARTNERS TRY TO STOP MAKING OF ALI FILM

MUHAMMAD ALI's longtime manager and another associate
have filed a $50M federal lawsuit "in an effort to stop
Columbia Pictures from making a movie about the legendary
boxer," according to Rex Bowman of the RICHMOND TIMES-
DISPATCH. The suit, filed in Roanoke, VA, "alleges" that
Ali "sold the rights to his life story without the
permission of his two partners" in Muhammad Ali Productions
Inc. of Afton. Former Ali manager JABIR HERBERT MUHAMMAD
and JASON MARCUS HIRSCHFIELD, the son of Ali's former
attorney, want a judge to stop Columbia from proceeding with
the film, which is to feature WILL SMITH in the lead role.
In a statement, Columbia "rejected the lawsuit's claims" and
quotes Ali's wife, Lonnie, as calling the legal action a
"calculated attack on Muhammad personally" (RTD, 3/17).
