IS THE TPA ASKING FOR TOO MUCH WHEN THERE'S MORE THAN ENOUGH?

The Tour Player Association (TPA) membership stands at
"about" 50, despite "agressive organizing" by the golf group,
according to Mark Hyman of BUSINESS WEEK, who writes that
"most troubling" for the TPA is that "fewer than half" of its
members have paid the $1,000 initiation fee and none of its
members are "superstars." IMG Senior VP Hughes Norton said
that among PGA Tour members, there's "a wonderful sense of
not rocking the boat, of 'We have a nice little club here.'"
Golfer Davis Love III, on the TPA: "I just see a lot of
negativism and a lot of distrust coming from a small group of
guys." Hyman notes that the TPA comes while Tour purses have
jumped "almost 200% this decade" and will hit a record
$123.3M this year, up 37% over '98. Hyman: "The TPA has
picked an odd time to cry poverty" (BUSINESS WEEK, 3/22).
