NFL SET TO BAN DEBARTOLO FOR ONE YEAR AND IMPOSE $1M FINE

NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has "decided to keep
exiled" 49ers co-Owner Eddie DeBartolo suspended from
football through the end of next season and impose a $1M fine
for his "criminal conduct" in a LA gaming license scandal,
according to sources of Matier & Ross of the S.F. CHRONICLE.
The sanction could be announced as early as this week. One
source close to DeBartolo said, "I think it's a positive that
they put a time limit on it. ... Before it was always open-
     ended" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 3/15). 49ers Co-Owner Denise
Debartolo York's husband and team VP John York tells the SAN
JOSE MERCURY NEWS, "What [Denise] wants is a separation from
her brother. His interests and her interests do not go down
the same path." York said that his wife is "not interested
in selling to a third party if DeBartolo does not return as
the team's active owner. ... The 49ers are not for sale now.
I can't tell you that that wouldn't change, but we don't have
any intentions to sell the team" (MERCURY NEWS, 3/15).
