SPREADING GOODWILL AMONG NEW YORKERS: GAMES TO LAKE PLACID

Time Warner's Winter Goodwill Games will launch next
February 17-20 in Lake Placid, NY, according to Karen Rosen
of the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION. The games will consist of
seven TV "friendly" sports: Figure skating, bobsled, luge,
skiing, ski jumping, snowboarding and short track
speedskating. TNT will carry 16 hours of event coverage
and, in preparation for the event, Lake Placid has begun a
$20M renovation of its facilities. Rosen, noting the
concept behind the Goodwill Games writes, "It was only
logical that an event that began in reaction to the Cold War
should expand into cold-weather competition" (ATLANTA
CONSTITUTION, 3/11). The WALL STREET JOURNAL reports that
the first three Goodwill Games posted a total loss of $109M,
and the fourth, held in N.Y., "drew slim crowds and lost
money." However, Turner Broadcasting execs hope the winter
event can be "packaged with other Time Warner properties to
help international sales" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 3/11).
