BERTELSMANN BACKS OUT OF BIDDING FOR EUROPEAN SOCCER LEAGUE

Bertelsmann said that it would not pay the $138M TV
rights fee that the European soccer association (UEFA) is
requesting, according to Ed Meza of DAILY VARIETY, leaving
the profitability of the televised European soccer Champions
League games "in serious question." Bertelsmann TV Dir
Michael Dornemann said that "there was no way" the company
"would fork out so much" for TV rights to the '99-2000
season, and the decision "was made in light of the game's
less than impressive ratings" on Bertelsmann's RTL network.
RTL was paying $69M a year for the TV rights to the league
and was seeing a yearly loss of $29M (DAILY VARIETY, 2/19).
