CANADIAN PRO TEAMS KNOW THEY MUST LIVE WITH NO FINANCIAL AID

Canadian team execs and league officials are
"disappointed but not surprised" that the federal budget
"will likely not provide any relief for [their] financial
difficulties," according to Michael Grange of the Toronto
GLOBE & MAIL. Orca Bay Sports & Entertainment President
Stephen Bellringer said that the "public debate that's been
generated has been healthy," but he said that people need to
realize that "only" 2-3% of the people working for the
company, which owns the Grizzlies and Canucks, are athletes.
Bellringer: "We employ 1,500 people, let's talk about the
other 97 or 98 per cent." NHL Senior VP/Legal Affairs Bill
Daly said that the league is "not discouraged" by the
decision, as it "will continue to carry our case to the
appropriate individuals in the federal government and to
Canadian sports fans" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 2/12).
