FISH THAT SAVED PITTSBURGH? LEMIEUX LOOKING TO BUY PENGUINS

The Penguins yesterday withdrew their request for a
time extenstion to file a reorganization plan for the
franchise, "leaving the way wide open for creditors to come
forward with plans of their own to rescue" the team,
according to Belser & Kovacevic of the PITTSBURGH POST-
GAZETTE. After the move, former player Mario Lemieux
reiterated his interest in the team. Lemieux: "We've been
working pretty hard the last couple of months to put some
investors together not only to buy the team but to make sure
it stays in Pittsburgh." Lemieux's investment team includes
attorneys Tom and Steve Reich, Doug Campbell and Chuck
Greenberg, but none of the potential investors "is known."
Harry Manion, attorney for Penguins co-Owner Roger Marino,
said the team wanted to "invite" others to come up with a
reorganization plan. Manion: "We're saying to people, `If
you have any idea on how to finance this team, step
forward.' All I really want to do is smoke them out. Does
Mario really want to own this team?" (POST-GAZETTE, 2/10).
