Univ. of North Carolina basketball coach Bill Guthridge
and football coach Carl Torbush signed "personal-services
contracts" with VilCom Sports, a Chapel Hill-based company
that will produce weekly radio and TV shows with the two
coaches, according to Tim Peeler of the Greensboro NEWS &
RECORD. Guthridge's four-year deal with VilCom is worth
$1.2M, and will pay him $285,000 this year, with a $10,000
raise each additional year of the contract. The VilCom
package pushes Guthridge's total coaching salary from a base
of $155,000 to over $1M per year when bonuses and incentives
are figured in. Torbush's VilCom deal is for $800,000 over
four years and begins with $185,000 for this year, with a
$10,000 increase after each year of the contract. Torbush's
entire annual salary will now be around $500,000, up from a
base of $135,000. Guthridge will participate in 21 half-
hour TV programs, 21 weekly radio call-in shows and 95 five-
minute daily radio segments. Torbush's package includes 14
TV shows, 14 weekly radio call-in shows and 75 five-minute
daily radio segments. VilCom is in the first year of a
five-year, $10M contract to produce multimedia broadcasts
for the UNC Athletics Department (NEWS & RECORD, 1/22).
