HE'S SIMPLY RED: MCCOMBS RECEIVES GLOWING PROFILE ON CBS

Vikings Owner RED MCCOMBS was profiled during the "Eye
On America" segment on CBS Evening News, and in the intro,
CBS's Dan Rather called McCombs a "billionaire car salesman"
who also "knows how to share his good fortune." CBS's Bob
McNamara: "In just his first year as owner ... The preacher
of pride and possibility has his team in the Super Bowl race
and he has generated a season of sell-out crowds for the
first time in years." McNamara: "More than a hands-on
owner, McCombs has embraced his team." McNamara: "[But] for
all his good fortune, [McCombs] stays fondest of the tiny
San Antonio public school he saved from being closed [after
it was burned down by vandals five years ago]." He provided
both "money and mentoring programs" to the school. McNamara
adds that the school "has done so well" it is now
"nationally recognized for academic excellence." McNamara:
"Today in Minnesota, McCombs is a hero on a honeymoon. But
in the hearts of kids in his hometown, the measure of this
man is more in his giving than his winning" (CBS, 1/8).
