          Cardinals 1B MARK MCGWIRE was named TIME magazine's
     "Hero of the Year."  TIME's Joel Stein: "He realizes that he
     is not everyone's image of a hero.  So McGwire has become a
     self-publicist of the Bob Dole school, manufacturing a
     stilted, stiff, serious persona" (TIME, 12/28 issue)....News
     Corp. Chair RUPERT MURDOCH will appear as himself in Fox's
     Super Bowl Sunday special episode of "The Simpsons" (SAN
     DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 12/19)....49ers QB STEVE YOUNG, on his
     cameo last week on ABC's "Dharma and Greg": "Anytime you can
     make the 49ers look good and have fun with San Francisco, as
     far as the city, it's a good thing.  I was probably my
     horrible self" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 12/20).
