MORE FROM THE GRIDIRON: SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's John Lombardo reports that the expansion Browns rank 20th out of the 31 NFL teams in merchandise sales through October '98, according to Logo Athletic, and 15th, according to Pro Player. Pro Player Dir of Licensing Todd Rostello said that the Browns account for "about" 5% of the league's $2.5B in licensing sales, which translates into roughly $125M in sales. The Browns are "expected to unveil" a new, secondary logo, which could help them "leap to near the top of the merchandise pack" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 12/7 issue). ...FOOTBALL DIGEST's David Stone examines the NFL's Quarterback Club. The marketing group, "comprised of the biggest names" in the NFL, is owned by its membership, which currently numbers 43 players. NFLP Senior VP Howard Handler, on new members: "When there's a big new superstar like a Terrell Davis, they talk among each other and decide who they want to bring in" (FOOTBALL DIGEST, 1/99 issue).
