MEDIA NOTES

Yankees manager Joe Torre "visited publishers over the
past 10 days, trying to drum up interest" for his
motivational book. Jonathan Diamond, an agent for Torre at
RLR Associates: "Hopefully it will be worked out over the
next week" (N.Y. POST, 11/22).....In Chicago, Ed Sherman
writes that ESPN's Andrea Kremer "is in the mix" to be the
next host of "Up Close." Sherman: "Would ESPN put a woman
in that show? It's sad to still have to bring up that
question in 1998. Let's hope that Kremer is judged by her
merits, which are considerable, and not for her gender"
     (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/23)....Barry Diller's Miami-based WAMI-
TV is profiled in the N.Y. TIMES. WAMI focuses on local
news, sports and entertainment programming, and Diller, who
paid $6M for Heat broadcast rights, said, "Sports helps
enormously. When you are unknown, having something known is
of enormous benefit" (N.Y. TIMES, 11/23). ...Ernie Harwell,
who was let go as Tigers radio announcer eight seasons ago,
"is on the verge" of returning as the team's radio play-by-
play voice. Harwell, 81, would replace Frank Beckmann, who
would assume TV duties (DETROIT NEWS, 11/22).
