OWNERS GOING TO LA-BATT FOR THE JAYS, NOT FOR SKYDOME

Blue Jays Owner Interbrew, and its subsidiary, Labatt
Brewing, has "decided to hang on" to the team, but the group
has told its SkyDome partners that it wants to "own all of
the stadium or none of it," according to Paul Brent of the
FINANCIAL POST. Interbrew and Labatt, currently negotiating
a new 10-year lease for the Jays at SkyDome, said that their
"position on both sides of the bargaining table can't
continue." Meanwhile, Labatt President Hugo Powell said the
team should switch divisions and not compete against the AL
East's top spenders: "It's hopeless to try and compete with
the Yankees, Baltimore and Boston" (FINANCIAL POST, 11/21).
SKYDOME SEEKS COURT PROTECTION: In Toronto, Tony Van
Alphen wrote that SkyDome is "expected to seek court
protection from its creditors" next week. According to
sources, SkyDome will apply for protection to reorganize
debts, renegotiate contracts and avoid bankruptcy (TORONTO
STAR, 11/21). SkyDome is reportedly C$1.2M behind in
municipal tax payments (TORONTO SUN, 11/23).
