FRANCHISE NOTES

In TN, 13,120 TENNESSEAN readers voted over a five-day
period on a new name for the NFL Oilers. The name Tornadoes
(2,194 votes) finished ahead of the Copperheads (2,135
votes). Oilers Exec VP Don MacLachlan said that "any public
response to one or more proposed names will be factored into
the final decision" (TENNESSEAN, 10/25)....In NJ, John Rowe
wrote in his column that "baseball and the Yankees need"
Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner, and that he has been a
"survivor" in a time when "the giant corporations buying
franchises are more interested in bottom lines than wins and
losses." Rowe: "Steinbrenner is an owner you can boo and
cheer and he might even listen. Try booing Cablevision and
see how far you get" (Bergen RECORD, 10/25). NEWSDAY's
Steve Jacobson wrote that Cablevision owning the Yankees
"scares me more than a kinder, gentler Steinbrenner"
(NEWSDAY, 10/25)....In Charlotte, Eric Frazier writes of NFL
Panthers PSL holders selling their licenses. Two upper-
level seats near the 30-yard line were bought at an auction
for $3,200, $400 less than what the team originally sold the
licenses for in '93 (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 10/26).
