PADRES USE SEASON-ENDING PARADE TO PUSH PROP C SUPPORT

In San Diego, thousands of Padres fans attended "a
parade honoring the players," according to Jeff McDonald of
the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. It was an afternoon "to toast
the finest year ever recorded by a San Diego baseball team,
and for some, to parlay that appreciation into a new
ballpark." Throughout the crowd, campaign posters "urged
support" for the $411M ballpark and redevelopment measure
Proposition C that "will be decided by city voters" on
November 3. Padres RF Tony Gwynn told the fans: "Nov. 3rd
is coming quickly. You know what we need to do" (UNION-
TRIBUNE, 10/24). Padres 1B/OF Mark Sweeney told the crowd
     -- estimated at 100,000 -- "Vote yes on C" (AP, 10/24).
TREASURE CHEST: In San Diego, Gerry Braun reported that
the Padres have contributed "nearly" $2.2M in cash and
"nonmonetary contributions -- on behalf" of the ballot
measure. Prop C opponents "have put together a
comparatively feeble $5,819." The Padres are the largest
source of Prop C contributions, as they have given
$1,482,000 in cash and $250,000 in non-monetary aid to its
campaign committee, Citizens for Revitalized Neighborhoods
and a Ballpark for San Diego. So far, the campaign "is on
pace to spend" $700,000 on television ads and $300,000 on
radio ads (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/24).
